Insurance Agency Belfast & Northern Ireland

An insurance agency is an intermediary that represents one or more specific insurance companies, selling their products rather than searching the whole market. This page explains what an insurance agency is, how it differs from a broker or an insurer, and how to check that an agency is authorised before you arrange cover in Belfast or across Northern Ireland.

What an insurance agency is

An insurance agency — sometimes called an appointed representative or tied agent — is an intermediary that represents one or more specific insurance companies. Unlike a broker, who may search the whole market, an agency offers the products of the insurer or insurers it represents. The agency acts on behalf of the insurer, not on your behalf, which is the key distinction from a broker.

This does not mean an agency is a poor choice — many people arrange perfectly good cover through agencies. But it does mean you should understand that the range of policies you are offered is limited to the insurer or insurers the agency represents, and that the agency is not acting as your independent adviser. If you want a whole-of-market comparison, a broker may be more appropriate.

The problem: agency, broker or insurer — which are you dealing with?

The terms 'agency', 'broker' and 'insurer' are sometimes used loosely, and it is not always obvious which type of provider you are dealing with. An agency represents specific insurers and sells their products. A broker searches the market on your behalf. An insurer underwrites the risk and pays claims. The distinction matters because it affects the range of policies you are offered, who is advising you, and whose interest the intermediary is acting in.

If you are unsure whether a provider is an agency or a broker, ask. An authorised provider should be able to explain how they operate, which insurers they represent or search, and how they are paid. This transparency helps you understand what you are getting before you arrange cover.

Why the distinction matters

An agency can only offer the products of the insurer or insurers it represents. If none of those insurers offers the cover you need — or if a different insurer offers better terms for your risk — the agency cannot show you that option. A broker, by contrast, may search a wider market and present options from several insurers. For straightforward risks where the represented insurer's product is suitable, this may not matter. For more complex or unusual risks, it can.

It is also worth understanding how the agency is remunerated. Agencies typically receive commission from the insurer they represent. This is not inherently a problem, but it means the agency's income depends on placing you with that insurer. An authorised agency should be transparent about this arrangement.

In the UK, insurance agencies may be directly authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority or operate as appointed representatives of an authorised firm. Either way, you can check their regulatory status on the Financial Services Register. Dealing with an unauthorised agency means you may not have access to the Financial Ombudsman Service or the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

How to find and check an insurance agency in Belfast

Ask which insurers the agency represents, what products they can offer, how the agency is paid, and what the claims process is. If you want a wider comparison, consider a broker as well. Before you share personal or business information or arrange cover, verify that the agency is authorised. You can check whether an insurer or insurance intermediary is authorised on the Financial Conduct Authority's Financial Services Register at register.fca.org.uk, and check a firm's permissions and any disciplinary history. Always confirm a provider is appropriately authorised before sharing detailed personal or business information or arranging cover.
